Two Die in Separate Drownings at Thane Lakes

Authorities have launched inquiries after recovering both bodies from unregulated lakes during a season marked by rising monsoon water fatalities.

  • On August 11, Piyush Gajanan Sonawane, 12, misjudged water depth and drowned at Ram Mandir Lake in Kasarvadavali before being declared dead at Thane Civil Hospital.
  • Later that day, 21-year-old Tejas Dudhavade went missing at Pakhanda Lake in Ovala and was found by locals before doctors pronounced him dead at a hospital.
  • Regional Disaster Management Cell teams, backed by the fire brigade and local responders, dispatched rescue vans, ambulances and fire tenders to both sites.
  • Kasarvadavali police registered accidental death reports for both cases and have opened investigations into the circumstances of the drownings.
  • These incidents follow a series of monsoon-season water fatalities across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and have spurred calls for warning signage, barriers and community rescue training.
