Two Die After Snowmobile Breaks Through Adirondack Ice as 6-Year-Old Survives

Troopers attribute the incident to a snowmobile breaking through ice on Chaumont Pond connected to the Oswegatchie River.

Overview

  • State police identified the victims as Bryan LaPlante, 33, of Newton Falls, and Michael Booth, 48, of Oswegatchie.
  • Authorities were called around 7:40 p.m. Sunday to the Oswegatchie River along County Route 60 in the town of Clifton, St. Lawrence County.
  • A relative, Patrick LaPlante, searched for the group, found Bryan in the water, fell through trying to help, got out, and returned home as the 6-year-old arrived after walking from the scene.
  • Responders located LaPlante and Booth unresponsive in the water, attempted resuscitation, and both were later pronounced dead at Gouverneur Hospital.
  • The adult who returned home and the child were treated for hypothermia at Clifton-Fine Hospital, and state police say the investigation is ongoing.
