Two Dead, Three Injured in Overnight Fire at Pitampura Scrap Storage Plot

Investigators are examining whether highly combustible scrap stored under tin sheds accelerated the blaze, with forensic samples collected.

Overview

  • The blaze was reported around 1:25 am in Old Pitampura and was brought under control by about 2:30 am before being extinguished at 3:25 am, fire officials said.
  • Delhi Fire Services deployed six engines initially, later increasing to nine units including water tenders, bowsers and support vehicles.
  • Five people were rescued with burns and taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, where Viresh/Biresh and Satish were declared dead and three survivors remain under treatment.
  • Police said the victims were migrant scrap collectors from Bihar’s Nalanda district who lived under the tin sheds at the site.
  • Crime and forensic teams collected samples as the cause is investigated, with reports differing on whether two or three of four sheds were gutted and police noting damage to vehicles and stored cardboard.
