Two Dead, One Wounded in Day of the Dead Cemetery Shooting; Mexico Cancels Celebrations Amid Violence

Violence mars traditional festivity as gunmen kill a businessman and his bodyguard in cemetery attack; several towns including Santa Ana and Benjamin Hill suspend Day of the Dead celebrations in response to escalating regional tensions.

  • Two men were murdered, and a third person was injured in a shooting during Mexico's Day of the Dead holiday at a cemetery in Naucalpan, a Mexico City suburb. The perpetrator used the annual tradition of visiting tombstones of deceased relatives as a trap for the victims.
  • The victims of the shooting were reported to be a businessman who offered bullet-proofing services for cars and his bodyguard. Official information about the motive behind the attack has not been released.
  • There was an incidence of violence in Northern Mexico, where police officers were attacked between the towns of Santa Ana and Magdalena de Kino, close to the Arizona border. The attackers left behind three assault rifles, a truck, and smears of blood before escaping to a nearby mountain.
  • As a result of the escalating violence and tension in the region, the mayor of Santa Ana suspended school and postponed all Day of the Dead celebrations until further notice.
  • Several other towns, including Benjamin Hill located 25 miles south of Santa Ana, have also cancelled their traditional Day of the Dead celebrations. Benjamin Hill cancelled a parade and altar-decorating ceremony, and halted all north-bound school buses.
