Overview

• CHP officers attempted a traffic stop around 3:40 a.m. on westbound I-580 near Eden Canyon Road after spotting a white Mercedes at high speed.
• The driver fled toward San Leandro and tried to exit westbound I-238 to East 14th Street, where the Mercedes crashed into a sound wall.
• The driver and one passenger in the Mercedes were pronounced dead at the scene, and a second passenger was hospitalized with major injuries.
• A pursuing CHP unit also crashed into the same sound wall while attempting the exit, injuring two officers with major but non-life-threatening injuries.
• CHP says the patrol car did not strike the Mercedes, the victims' identities remain undisclosed, and the Golden Gate Division MAIT is leading the investigation.
