Two Dead in Submerged Car: Second SUV Found Empty in St. Lucie County

Deputies seek tips about a midday Indrio Road crash after an empty SUV was found on a canal bank.

Overview

  • Maintenance workers spotted damage on a guardrail along Orange Avenue near Rim Road around 11:20 a.m., leading divers to a partially submerged Nissan Sentra with two deceased women inside.
  • Florida Highway Patrol says the Nissan appears to have crashed on its own after the driver lost control for an unknown reason and went through the guardrail into the canal.
  • FHP identified the victims only by age and hometown as a 28-year-old from Vero Beach and a 21-year-old from Fort Pierce, and investigators said their families reported them missing Sunday after a trip to Miami.
  • Roughly an hour later, deputies found an SUV nearly vertical on a canal bank off Indrio Road near Johnston Road with no occupants located in or around the vehicle.
  • Dive teams and K-9 units found no footprints or alerts near the Indrio scene, investigators say the two incidents are not believed to be related, and the Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who was on Indrio Road between noon and 12:30 p.m. to call with information.
