Two Dead as Withernsea Sea Search Continues for One Missing Person

Freezing seas with three-metre waves are hampering an overnight multi-agency search along the East Yorkshire coast.

Overview

  • HM Coastguard launched a major operation after 3.10pm reports of people in difficulty off Central Promenade in Withernsea.
  • A 67-year-old man was recovered from the water and died at the scene, and a second body was found later in the evening.
  • Crews continue to search for at least one more person, with police stating the deaths are not being treated as suspicious.
  • Helicopters, a fixed‑wing aircraft, RNLI lifeboats and local rescue teams responded, though three‑metre waves and sub-zero conditions hindered efforts and at times prevented launches.
  • Authorities refined early estimates that up to four people were involved and asked the public to avoid the seafront during ongoing operations.
