Overview

  • A strong Southern Ocean low and cold front drove damaging to destructive winds, heavy rain and thunderstorms across Tasmania.
  • Peak gusts reached 139 km/h at Scotts Peak and 154 km/h at Maatsuyker Island, with exposed locations experiencing winds above 120 km/h.
  • More than 20,000 properties lost power, and TasNetworks warned some complex, hard‑to‑access outages could take at least 72 hours to restore.
  • Mersey Community Hospital sustained weather damage, ambulances were diverted, and clinical services operated at reduced capacity.
  • The SES logged 72 requests for assistance and advised caution for falling trees and flooding as conditions were expected to ease into Friday evening.
