Two Dead After Wrong-Way Crash Shuts Northbound I-95 in Howard County

Maryland State Police say possible alcohol use and excess speed may have been factors as their Crash Team leads an active investigation.

Overview

  • A southbound 2025 Jeep Gladiator entered the northbound lanes and struck a northbound 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee at mile marker 44 on I-95 in Elkridge, killing both drivers.
  • The drivers were identified as Taleb Ait Zakariae, 37, of Rosedale, and Timothy Summerville Jr., 47, of Baltimore, and both were pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The crash happened Saturday morning just before 4:30 a.m., and all northbound lanes at the scene were closed for hours while investigators documented the wreckage and reopened lanes progressively.
  • Maryland State Police said alcohol and excessive speed may have contributed to the collision and the Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing probe with help from Howard County police and the State Highway Administration.
  • Investigators will complete toxicology testing and vehicle reconstruction before final conclusions or charges are announced and wrong-way crashes at highway speeds are often fatal, underscoring safety risks on overnight roadways.
