Two Dead, 11 Rescued After Virar Apartment Collapse as Manual Search Continues

NDRF teams report that narrow lanes are blocking heavy machinery, forcing a longer, manual operation with more people feared trapped.

Overview

  • Officials said the rear portion of the four-storey Ramabai Apartment in Virar, Palghar, collapsed around 11:30 pm onto a chawl below, leaving at least two dead as 11 people were pulled out alive.
  • An infant died on the way to hospital, according to NDRF Deputy Commander Pramod Singh, who noted an initial manual and canine search recovered four people, including one fatality.
  • Two NDRF teams—one from Mumbai and one from Palghar—are leading the effort with Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation and fire personnel in a coordinated response.
  • Rescuers say all work is being done by hand because the approach is too narrow for heavy equipment, and locals estimate about five people may still be under the debris.
  • In separate incidents, a portion of a building collapsed in Andheri’s Sahara P&T Colony with no injuries reported, and News18 reported a man was critically hurt in an Antop Hill house collapse earlier in the day.
