Two Corsica Wildfires Contained After Burning 436 Hectares

Investigators are examining a suspected human cause following full containment.

  • Fires ignited Sunday near Fromentica in Saint-Florent and by the Padula lake in Oletta, a few hours apart.
  • The prefecture now tallies 226 hectares burned at Saint-Florent and 210 between Oletta and Olmeta di Tuda.
  • Up to 170 firefighters, 50 ground vehicles and two Dash plus two Canadair operated Sunday, with about 230 personnel and aircraft continuing hotspot work Monday.
  • Authorities report no injuries and no homes lost, an agricultural warehouse was damaged, a campsite was evacuated, and access on RD81 and RD82 was restricted.
  • The Bastia prosecutor opened investigations into the blazes; the prefect cited indications of a human origin and an investigative cell has been set up.
