Overview
- Gunfire broke out at a block party at New Wilmington Arms Apartments around 11:20 p.m. on July 4, where five people were shot and a man and 19-year-old Meah Bordenave-Jenkins were killed.
- About 40 minutes later a second shooting on the 2100 block of North Grandee Avenue wounded two men and left 38-year-old Thaddeus Clark dead, according to the medical examiner.
- Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators say they have found no evidence linking the two scenes, have not made any arrests, and are asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Bureau.
- Family and officials identified the victims and described their local ties and roles: Eric Washington was a community advocate and former aide who officials say tried to deescalate a conflict, and Bordenave-Jenkins was a UNLV sophomore studying nursing.
- Community leaders organized vigils and a peace gathering in response to the killings, and local voices say the shootings add to wider concerns about safety at holiday gatherings and violence in Los Angeles County.
