Two Children Killed on Way to School in Maryland
Investigation ongoing after van driver struck students and adult relative in crosswalk; crossing guard position at accident site had been vacant.
- Two children, 10-year-old Shalom Mbah and 5-year-old Sky Sosa, were struck and killed by a van while crossing the street on their way to Riverdale Elementary School in Maryland.
- An adult relative walking with the children was also struck but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
- The driver of the van was not injured and is not currently in custody. The investigation by the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is ongoing and the findings will be turned over to the State’s Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.
- The intersection where the accident occurred is usually manned by a crossing guard, but the position has been vacant since the previous guard retired over the summer.
- The police department has struggled to fill crossing guard positions in the county, with a vacancy rate for part-time positions of nearly 56 percent.
