Two Chicago Police Shootings Hours Apart Lead to Charges, Internal Reviews

With charges filed, administrative and oversight reviews are underway.

Overview

  • An off-duty 64-year-old Broadview officer shot 19-year-old Jeremiah Myles after he allegedly approached with a knife in Greater Grand Crossing around 9 p.m., and Myles now faces aggravated assault of a peace officer and burglary charges.
  • Police say Myles fled after being shot, was taken into custody with a knife recovered, and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
  • Around 11 p.m. in Austin, officers confronted 55-year-old Antonio Wallace, who allegedly advanced with a large knife; after commands and multiple Taser deployments failed, one officer fired, and Wallace was later charged with three counts of aggravated assault of a police officer and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
  • COPA is investigating the West Side shooting and CPD’s Investigative Response Team is reviewing the South Side incident, with the West Side officer placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
  • Both men were hospitalized and scheduled for detention hearings on Saturday as the criminal cases proceed alongside oversight investigations.
