Two Charged in Alleged Ramming of CBP Vehicle Freed on Bond as FBI Seeks Others

Defense says body-camera video contradicts the government’s account of how the shooting unfolded.

Overview

  • U.S. District Judge Heather McShain ordered Marimar Martinez and Anthony Ruiz released pending trial, citing their lack of criminal history, community ties, and Martinez’s need for medical care after being shot.
  • Prosecutors allege a convoy followed CBP agents for 20–30 minutes before Martinez and then Ruiz struck the agents’ SUV near 39th and Kedzie, after which an agent fired and Martinez and Ruiz were arrested at separate nearby locations.
  • Martinez’s attorney says an agent’s body camera captures the officer saying, “Do something, b----,” before shooting, and argues agents’ vehicles hit the defendants’ cars; prosecutors said in court that Martinez had a loaded gun in the car but did not brandish it.
  • The FBI and ATF say about 10 vehicles were involved and are offering up to $50,000 for tips, asking the public to submit videos or photos to the FBI’s Chicago office.
  • Investigators are seeking the driver of a black Chevy Tahoe with Illinois plate EM 62829, suspected of repeatedly ramming an ICE vehicle on the 3700 block of South Kedzie, with the driver still at large.
