Two Charged After Streeterville Garage Shooting and Carjacking

The arrests raise questions about post-release supervision following a police tracking operation that recovered a firearm on the South Side.

Overview

  • The attack began Friday when two suspects confronted a 64-year-old man in a lower level of a Streeterville parking garage and one of them shot him in the side during an attempted robbery.
  • After the shooting the suspects allegedly carjacked a 29-year-old’s gray Subaru Forester nearby and drove to the South Side before crashing near the 8100 block of South Loomis.
  • Police arrested Marques Williams, 22, and a 16-year-old in Morgan Park roughly 90 minutes after the carjacking and recovered a firearm at the crash scene.
  • Both face multiple felony counts including attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery with discharge of a firearm, and aggravated vehicular hijacking, and detention hearings are scheduled in county court.
  • Court records show Williams has prior armed-robbery and weapons adjudications and a July stolen-vehicle arrest that a judge dismissed for lack of probable cause, a detail that adds to scrutiny of supervision and release practices.
