Two Charged After East Harlem Gunfight as NYPD Reviews Police Gunfire

Investigators are examining body-camera and surveillance footage to determine whether police gunfire wounded the teens.

Overview

  • Two 15-year-old boys were wounded near East 123rd Street and Second Avenue, and police say one exchanged gunfire with 18-year-old Damian Calhoun while the other did not appear to be a participant.
  • Calhoun was charged with attempted murder and weapon possession alongside a 15-year-old shot in the leg, and officials say Calhoun previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder in 2024 as a juvenile.
  • Officers recovered a firearm with a high-capacity magazine from Calhoun’s backpack, Calhoun was not shot, and all involved were taken into custody.
  • The NYPD Force Investigation Division is reviewing body-camera and surveillance video to establish the sequence of events and whether officers who opened fire struck anyone.
  • In a separate Lower East Side shooting hours earlier, a 21-year-old intended target and a 63-year-old bystander were wounded as two suspects fled on an e-bike, and no arrests were reported.
