Two Charged After Border Patrol Vehicle Rammed in Chicago

Assault charges follow pending a federal review of conflicting accounts.

Overview

  • Federal prosecutors charged Marimar Martinez, 30, and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, 21, with forcibly assaulting, impeding, and interfering with federal officers after a confrontation near West 39th Street and South Kedzie Avenue.
  • The criminal complaint alleges Martinez and Ruiz struck and boxed in a CBP SUV carrying three agents, and that an agent fired about five shots at Martinez after she accelerated toward him.
  • Martinez was located at a repair shop and taken by ambulance to a hospital for gunshot wounds, while Ruiz was found at a nearby gas station; both remain in custody pending initial court appearances.
  • DHS officials said the woman was armed and that agents were boxed in by 10 cars, but the complaint makes no mention of a firearm and cites photos and body-worn camera video showing collision damage.
  • Chicago police said officers did respond to maintain safety and traffic control and that federal authorities are leading the investigation, disputing reports of a department-wide stand-down order.
