Two Berlin Basement Fires Contained After Evacuations

Investigators are examining causes tied to stored materials in both buildings.

Overview

  • The incidents occurred hours apart on the same day, first around 13:00 on Marienfelder Allee and later shortly after 19:00 on Albrechtstraße in Steglitz.
  • On Marienfelder Allee, building parts and leaves ignited in the basement of a four-storey residential and commercial building, and 22 firefighters ended the operation in about two hours with no injuries reported.
  • In Steglitz, rubbish and stored firewood burned in a multi-family house basement, smoke reached upper floors, and 15 residents were led out via the stairwell and received on-site care.
  • Fire crews used hoses, breathing apparatus and pressure fans to suppress flames, clear heavy smoke and prevent further spread, enabling partial reoccupation.
  • Berlin police have opened investigations into both fires following the completion of emergency operations.
