Two Balconies Collapse onto Ground-Floor Terrace in Nigrán

Official preliminary inspection points to corroded iron bolts as the likely cause and remaining balconies have been closed pending an external technical review.

Overview

  • Early on Wednesday two stacked balconies failed in chain and fell onto a ground-floor terrace and beside the building’s main entrance, with large concrete blocks and twisted railings left on the pavement.
  • There were no injuries reported and residents were fortunate that the collapse happened while the building was largely occupied but the terrace below was empty.
  • Police, Guardia Civil, local rescue teams and municipal officials attended the scene and a municipal technician carried out an initial inspection that found no clear internal structural damage.
  • The municipal technician issued immediate safety measures, including taping off and ordering provisional shoring for the remaining balconies and arranging debris removal.
  • The building dates to about 1992–1993 and officials said oxidized iron fasteners that held stone balustrades may have failed; an external technical inspection will confirm the cause and define repairs.
