Two Australians Charged Over Alleged Plot to Supply Arms to West Papua Rebels

The case grew from the 2023 abduction of New Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens, underscoring extensive cross-border policing.

Overview

  • Police say a 44-year-old Queensland man and a 64-year-old NSW man conspired to traffic firearms, ammunition and military-grade equipment to the TPNPB, and discussed sourcing Australian military weapons.
  • The pair face charges including conspiracy to export weapons and firearm parts, unlawful supply of weapons, and conspiracy to export Tier 2 goods that carries a maximum 10-year penalty.
  • Searches in November 2024 seized ammunition and 13.6 kilograms of mercury from the Urunga property, and the Queensland man is also charged with possessing explosives without authority.
  • Both men were granted bail and are scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 17.
  • The two-year investigation was led by the Queensland Joint Counter Terrorism Team with the AFP, QPS, ASIO and New Zealand Police, and officers allege the NSW man travelled to Indonesia in March–April 2024 with an optical rifle scope.
