Two Arrested, Released on Bail After Baby Killed in XL Bully Attack in Rogiet

Police say the six-year-old XL bully was registered with Defra under a 2024 exemption certificate.

Overview

  • Emergency services were called to a home on Crossway in Rogiet at about 6pm on Sunday, where a nine-month-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • A man in his thirties and a woman in her twenties were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing death and on suspicion of child neglect.
  • Both suspects were released on police bail as Gwent Police conduct ongoing enquiries in what officers describe as a live criminal investigation.
  • Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend urged the public not to speculate online and asked anyone with information, including the dog's prior behaviour, to contact police, with officers maintaining a visible presence in the area.
  • Police said the family dog involved was a male, black XL bully that was previously seized and put down, and noted the case sits within the wider XL bully ban introduced in England and Wales in February 2024.
