Two Arrested in Kido Nursery Ransomware Case After Data on Thousands of Children Stolen

The case drew regulatory scrutiny following Radiant’s posting of children’s profiles to pressure a bitcoin ransom.

Overview

  • Metropolitan Police detained a 17-year-old and a 22-year-old in Bishop’s Stortford on suspicion of computer misuse and blackmail, and both remain in custody.
  • Investigators say about 8,000 children’s records were taken from Kido, including names, photographs and addresses, with profiles of at least 10 children posted online.
  • The group calling itself Radiant claimed responsibility, contacted parents to intensify pressure, and demanded payment in bitcoin reported at around £600,000.
  • Radiant later told the BBC it blurred and deleted the child data and issued an apology, a claim authorities have not independently verified.
  • Kido informed parents the intrusion involved data hosted via the Famly platform, while Famly’s CEO said its systems were not breached and no other customers were affected; the ICO is assessing the incident as police inquiries continue.
