Overview

  • An off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was ambushed in Manhattan’s Riverside Park late Saturday when two men on a moped attempted a robbery and shot him in the face and forearm.
  • The officer drew his service weapon and returned fire, wounding one assailant, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, who was later taken into custody after hospital treatment.
  • Mora Nunez, a 21-year-old Dominican national with prior felony arrests and an active kidnapping warrant in Massachusetts, had been released into the U.S. in April 2023 despite an outstanding deportation order.
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Christian Aybar-Berroa, identified as the second suspect and also an undocumented Dominican immigrant with prior charges, as authorities prepared federal and local counts.
  • Law enforcement officials and political leaders have questioned interior immigration enforcement practices and sanctuary-city protocols following the incident.
