Overview
- A crude explosive detonated inside a ground-floor rented room in Rajarhat on Friday evening, damaging nearby flats and injuring one tenant who is now out of immediate danger.
- Bomb-disposal teams and police recovered fragments, raw explosive material and at least two crude bombs from the scene but forensic tests are needed to say if the devices were live.
- Police arrested the prime suspect, Md Shamim (alias Salim), and the broker who arranged the rental, Shahenshah, after CCTV showed a white jute bag placed in the room minutes before the blast.
- The NIA took suo motu cognisance and collected samples while local New Town police, CID and bomb squads continue searches, call-record checks and questioning of other persons including the owner and a minor who carried the bag.
- Investigators will await MHA direction on any formal NIA takeover and are focusing next on forensic results, device origin and links revealed by call data to determine motive and any wider threat.
