Two Arrested After Boston Police Cruiser Burned in South End Vehicle Takeover

Detectives are seeking tips as arraignments in Roxbury District Court are pending.

Overview

  • Officers responded around 2:12 a.m. to Massachusetts Avenue and Tremont Street, where more than 100 people and several vehicles were blocking the intersection.
  • Crowd members threw fireworks, cones and poles at marked cruisers, and one cruiser filled with smoke and caught fire before Boston Fire crews extinguished the flames.
  • Viewer video shows fireworks launched at a surrounded cruiser and cars blocking nearby intersections, with some individuals climbing onto the vehicle.
  • Police arrested Julian Bowers, 18, of Cumberland, Rhode Island, and William Cantwell, 19, of Warwick, Rhode Island, after chases on charges including malicious destruction of property over $1,200, disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.
  • Investigators say Cantwell also faces a possession charge after marijuana edibles were found, evidence was documented by Crime Scene Response and Fire Investigation units, and the public is urged to contact District D-4 detectives at 617-343-4683.
