Two 4.1 Earthquakes Strike Oaxaca Without Triggering Alerts

They illustrate how Mexico’s seismic alert network relies on magnitude-distance rules to prioritize public warnings.

Overview

  • SSN detected one quake at 4:19 am near Salina Cruz (M4.1, 16.1 km depth) and another at 2:50 am near Loma Bonita (M4.1, 91.7 km depth) on August 15.
  • Neither event met SASMEX’s activation thresholds—which require at least magnitude 6 beyond 350 km, magnitude 5 between 250 km and 350 km, or above magnitude 5 within 250 km—so no sirens sounded.
  • Mexico’s SSN network has logged more than 21,074 earthquakes in 2025 to date, with over 15,500 between magnitude 3.0 and 3.9 and only two exceeding magnitude 6.
  • The USGS counted 27 quakes above magnitude 2.5 in North America and the Caribbean over the past 24 hours, the strongest at magnitude 4 near The Geysers, California.
  • Protección Civil continues to advise residents to stay calm, move to designated safety zones, avoid windows and heavy objects, and follow official brigade instructions during tremors.
