Twin Systems Intensify Northeast Monsoon Over Tamil Nadu and Kerala

A new Bay of Bengal low is expected to form on October 21, raising the risk of very heavy rain on Tamil Nadu’s north coast.

Overview

  • IMD reports a well-marked low over the southeast Arabian Sea likely to strengthen into a depression within about a day, with a separate low forecast to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21.
  • Idukki in Kerala recorded severe flooding and landslips, with one death confirmed after overnight downpours inundated homes, disrupted power and transport, and forced evacuations.
  • All 13 spillway shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam were opened to release excess water as levels rose to about 139 ft, and downstream residents were warned of possible inundation as additional dams also discharged flows.
  • Kerala remained under multiple IMD alerts, including orange warnings in several northern districts, while RMC Chennai signaled enhanced rainfall and issued a red alert for October 22 covering parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu.
  • Fishing was suspended in rough seas with squally winds up to 35–45 km/h gusting 55 km/h, and landslides led to the cancellation of Nilgiri Mountain Railway services as localized flooding hit parts of Chennai and other districts.
