Overview

  • The Dragon Bravo Fire breached control lines and destroyed between 50 and 80 structures, including the 1937 Grand Canyon Lodge, visitor center and employee housing.
  • The White Sage Fire has charred more than 40,000 acres near Jacob Lake while the Dragon Bravo Fire has burned over 5,000 acres inside the park, with both blazes at 0% containment.
  • A chlorine gas leak from a fire-ruined wastewater treatment plant prompted the evacuation of firefighters and hikers from inner canyon trails.
  • Park Service and Bureau of Land Management crews have shifted from managing a planned burn to an aggressive full suppression strategy.
  • Mandatory closures of the North Rim and inner canyon routes remain in effect for the rest of the season as extreme heat, low humidity and gusty winds fuel the blazes.
