Overview
- The blaze broke out around 11 p.m. Saturday on Calle San Martín in Santa Cruz, Querecotillo, rapidly consuming the child’s room and part of the home.
- Neighbors and attendees of a nearby school serenade tried to douse the flames with water and sand before firefighters from Company 43 of Sullana brought the fire under control.
- The dwelling’s highly combustible construction, including wooden poles and coconut palm, allowed the fire to spread within minutes, thwarting rescue efforts.
- Municipal risk-management official Juan Ruíz Sarango reported the family had lived at the site for about two months and said the municipality has assessed damages and is delivering material and psychological support.
