TV Globo’s Antártida Opens Gramado Using Unreal Virtual Production

Globo’s new Unreal-based studio enabled a confined Antarctic thriller that examines sexual violence at a Brazilian research station.

Overview

  • Antártida opened the 54th Festival de Cinema de Gramado on Friday, August 14, with a hors-concours screening and the cast on the red carpet.
  • The film was shot in Globo’s purpose-built virtual production studio of more than 1,500 m² using over 300 m² of LED, autotracking cameras and AI tools to simulate Antarctic environments in real time.
  • The plot centers on a sexual assault on a Brazilian Antarctic base that makes all men at the station suspects and follows subcommander Elisabeth as she leads an investigation against a machista culture.
  • The ensemble cast includes Andréa Beltrão, Lázaro Ramos, Marina Ruy Barbosa and Leandra Leal, the director and writers cite Ridley Scott’s Alien as an aesthetic reference, and the screenplay grew out of interest sparked by the 2012 Comandante Ferraz fire.
  • Paris Filmes will distribute Antártida in Brazilian cinemas on September 17, 2026, and industry figures say the production’s virtual workflow could change how large Brazilian films are staged and filmed.
