TÜV Finds Significant Defects at One in Five German Fuel Stations

The latest report, covering 5,325 sites, shows the share of defect-free facilities at its lowest in years.

Overview

  • Significant defects were identified at 21% of installations, marking a worsening trend from last year.
  • Only 42.8% of checked sites were completely defect-free, a four‑percentage‑point drop from 2024.
  • Inspectors reported leaks, damaged piping and faulty electrical systems, and in some cases took individual pumps out of service.
  • German rules require a pre‑commissioning check, a full inspection about every six years, and more frequent reviews of safety‑critical parts such as pumps.
  • TÜV expert Hermann Dinkler says overall safety remains high, accidents are extremely rare in Germany, and operators must fix identified faults promptly.
