Tuxedo Halts Snapdragon X1 Elite Linux Laptop After 18 Months

Unresolved Linux support gaps made continued X1E work commercially unviable.

Overview

  • Tuxedo paused development after finding the first‑generation X1E less suitable for Linux than expected.
  • Key Linux shortcomings included poor battery life, no viable BIOS update path, missing fan control, lack of KVM virtualization, limited USB4 throughput, and app‑level gaps for hardware video decoding.
  • The company said fixes would take several more months, by which time Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite is expected to arrive in the first half of 2026 after a September 2025 introduction.
  • Tuxedo will contribute its Device Tree and related work to the mainline Linux kernel, crediting collaboration with Linaro to improve support for compatible devices.
  • The firm will evaluate the X2 Elite for Linux suitability and may resume development if expectations are met and substantial X1E groundwork can be reused.
