Overview

  • Between 2019 and 2024, 89,461 collisions occurred during right turns, making it the most hazardous manoeuvre on UK roads.
  • Slowing down or stopping was linked to 59,158 crashes, with buses and coaches facing more than double the average collision risk during deceleration.
  • Moving off accounted for 47,723 crashes and was followed by waiting to go and turning left among the top five highest-risk actions.
  • Car drivers are 16.6% more likely than average to crash when turning right and face a 16.8% higher collision rate when waiting to make that manoeuvre.
  • Motorcyclists are 262.7% more likely to crash when overtaking on the offside, and heavy goods vehicles have a six‐and‐a‐half-times higher risk when changing lanes to the left.
