Overview

  • The aircraft departed Ganja, Azerbaijan, for Turkey and went down shortly after entering Georgian airspace.
  • Turkey’s Defence Ministry said 20 personnel were on board, and officials have not released casualty figures.
  • Search-and-rescue teams from Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan are operating near Sighnaghi, about five kilometres from the border.
  • Georgia’s air navigation service reported the C-130 vanished from radar minutes after entry into its airspace with no mayday recorded.
  • Video widely circulated by local media shows the plane spiralling and apparently breaking apart mid-air, but the cause remains undetermined.
