Turkey’s BOTAŞ Seals 20-Year U.S. LNG Deal, Lines Up Woodside Pact From 2030

Officials say the agreements bolster energy security, advancing a bid to build an LNG trading hub.

Overview

  • Mercuria signed a binding contract to supply BOTAŞ about 4 bcm of U.S.-sourced LNG per year from 2026 through 2045, with deliveries weighted to winter.
  • The Mercuria deal allows FOB liftings at U.S. ports and DES deliveries to terminals in Türkiye, Europe and North Africa.
  • Woodside and BOTAŞ executed a heads of agreement for roughly 5.8 bcm over nine years starting in 2030, primarily tied to Woodside’s Louisiana LNG project.
  • Woodside’s arrangement remains subject to a binding sales and purchase agreement, with the Louisiana project targeting first gas in 2029 after receiving final approval in April.
  • The signings were witnessed in New York by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, and coverage notes the long-term LNG shift could lessen Russian pipeline leverage in parts of Europe.
