Turkey Withdraws EU Bid to Define Döner, Ending Three-Year Dispute

German opposition helped derail a bid that threatened to curtail popular variants in thousands of German shops.

Overview

  • The European Commission confirmed the application was withdrawn on 23 September 2025, which ends the registration process.
  • The Istanbul-based International Dönerverband filed the request more than three years ago to secure EU-wide guaranteed traditional specialty status.
  • Germany lodged a formal objection, and a consultation concluded without agreement on 20 March, after which the file awaited a Commission decision.
  • The proposed standard required specific meats and methods, including beef from cattle at least 16 months old or defined sheep cuts, with tightly prescribed poultry and preparation rules.
  • German industry representatives welcomed the outcome as preserving variety in a market with about 18,500 outlets and roughly €2.4 billion in annual sales, while EU media reported the bid’s chances had fallen to near zero.
