Turkey Receives 137 Deported Gaza Flotilla Activists as Protests Sweep Europe

Israel has begun mass expulsions of flotilla detainees following the interception, with abuse claims drawing official denials.

Overview

  • Turkey’s foreign ministry said a Turkish Airlines flight brought 137 deportees to Istanbul, including 36 Turkish nationals and citizens from the United States, Italy, Malaysia, Jordan, Switzerland, Tunisia, Libya and other countries.
  • Italy’s foreign minister said 26 Italians were on the flight and that 15 others remain in Israeli custody pending expulsion next week, as Israel states it is expediting removals.
  • Legal group Adalah and multiple activists report denial of lawyers, water and medication, and hours kneeling with zip-tied hands, while Israel calls the accounts “complete lies” and says detainees are safe and their rights were upheld.
  • Swedish officials relayed that Greta Thunberg reported dehydration, insufficient food and suspected bedbug rashes in custody, and several deportees alleged she was mistreated and used for propaganda; Israeli authorities reject the claims.
  • The Israeli navy intercepted roughly 40–45 boats in international waters in recent days, detaining more than 450 people, as large rallies in Rome, Barcelona and Dublin pressed for their release and condemned the blockade.
