Turkey Gathers Arab-Islamic Guarantors in Istanbul to Solidify Gaza Ceasefire

Ankara seeks rapid steps to shift Gaza’s security and administration to Palestinian control.

Overview

  • Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will host a ministerial coordination meeting in Istanbul on Monday with counterparts from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
  • Fidan is expected to urge immediate arrangements that place Gaza’s governance and security under Palestinian authority and to press for coordinated action by Muslim countries to turn the truce into lasting peace.
  • Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will attend and intends to call for full implementation of the ceasefire, Israel’s complete withdrawal, unfettered humanitarian access, and reconstruction funding.
  • Ahead of the meeting, Fidan met senior Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Khayya in Istanbul to discuss the status of the ceasefire and the flow of humanitarian aid.
  • Key disputes remain unresolved, including Hamas disarmament, the timetable for Israeli withdrawal, and any international security role, with Israel’s Gideon Saar rejecting Turkish armed forces in Gaza as sporadic violence continues to test the truce.
