Tunnel Construction Advances for Munich's Second S-Bahn Line

Work begins on a critical underground connection at Marienhof while funding issues halt accessibility plans at Ostbahnhof.

Construction has started on a 91-meter tunnel linking the future Marienhof S-Bahn station with the existing U-Bahn lines at Marienplatz, part of Munich’s Second S-Bahn Stammstrecke project.
The tunnel is being built 27 meters underground with round-the-clock work by 120 specialists to ensure progress of up to one meter per day.
Safety measures include constant monitoring of surrounding structures and maintaining air pressure to manage groundwater challenges in the area.
The overall project faces significant delays and cost overruns, with completion now projected between 2035 and 2037, and costs rising to at least 7 billion euros.
Plans for a direct, barrier-free connection between the new Ostbahnhof station and the Werksviertel district have been canceled due to funding constraints.
