Overview
- Debris and a sudden influx of water entered an under-construction THDC tunnel near Mayapur (Pipalkoti) in Chamoli at about 7:05 pm on Thursday, trapping an estimated 18–19 workers.
- Multi-agency teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Army, ITBP, DIRF, CISF and local police launched search-and-rescue operations and have evacuated 13 workers so far.
- Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is personally monitoring the response and has ordered officials to carry out rescue work on a war footing and support affected families.
- Teams are working to clear heavy debris and standing water inside the tunnel to reach remaining personnel, with authorities preparing technical and safety investigations into the cause.
- The tunnel was being constructed by HCC for the THDC project, which will likely prompt regulatory reviews and scrutiny of construction-site safety if officials confirm systemic failures.
