Tumors Top Circulatory Diseases as Spain’s Leading Cause of Death for Second Consecutive Year

Provisional INE figures show a decline in circulatory deaths coinciding with steady tumor mortality in an aging population

Overview

  • In 2024, Spain recorded 433,357 deaths, with 218,746 among men and 214,801 among women.
  • Tumors accounted for 26.6% of fatalities compared with 26.1% from circulatory diseases, and circulatory deaths fell by 2.4% from the previous year.
  • Cancer of the lung and bronchus led tumor deaths with 23,239 cases (up 1.9%), and for the first time lung cancer fatalities in women (6,679) surpassed those from breast cancer.
  • COVID-19 fell out of the top 15 causes of death in 2024 for the first time since 2020.
  • External causes made up 4.2% of deaths, with accidental falls rising 6% to 4,407 fatalities while suicides declined 6.6% to 3,846.
