Tulum Opens Beaches for Free Access, Bans Outside Food and Coolers

Officials cast the move as a response to falling hotel occupancy.

Overview

  • Municipal president Diego Castañón Trejo said beaches are now free to enter for local, national and international visitors.
  • New rules bar visitors from bringing food, beverages, coolers or umbrellas, directing consumption to on-site businesses.
  • Castañón promoted the policy on social media during a coastal visit, highlighting support from the taquería La Eufemia.
  • State tourism data show Tulum’s weekly hotel occupancy fell from 62.6% (Jul 26–Aug 1) to 54.2% (Sept 27–Oct 3), with fewer flights also reported for Quintana Roo.
  • Separate figures reported a September 2025 occupancy of 49.2%, down from 66.7% a year earlier, as the mayor dismissed viral “empty Tulum” claims as a smear campaign.
