Overview
- The anonymous Milford-on-Sea couple discovered the coins in 2020 while weeding in their garden.
- A British Museum–organised excavation later uncovered six additional coins, and the full find was recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
- The assemblage spans issues from Henry VI in the 1420s to Henry VIII in the 1530s, with some pieces bearing the initials of Catherine of Aragon and Jane Seymour.
- Valued at about £230,000, the coins will be sold individually in Zurich by David Guest Numismatics on 5 November.
- Experts cite the hoard’s proximity to Christchurch Priory to suggest a Dissolution-era burial, and pandemic-era purchasing limits reportedly led to the coins being returned to the finders.
