Tucumán Sugar Mill Reopens Rail Spur After 45 Years

The upgrade aims to cut transport costs to enable direct shipments to Campana and Rosario once final conveyor and weighbridge works are finished.

Overview

  • A convoy departed from Ingenio Cruz Alta on Friday, August 28, 2026, marking the first use of the restored rail spur after more than 45 years.
  • Los Balcanes and engineering firm IETSA built roughly two kilometers of new track, a 4,500-square-meter logistics platform, track devices and a new security system to reconnect the mill to the national network.
  • Company plans estimate the facility can move about 60,000 tonnes of raw sugar per year in bulk and big bags, a figure the firm describes as an operational estimate rather than a guaranteed throughput.
  • A second project stage to install a conveyor belt and a validation weighbridge is under way and expected to finish in about two months, after which the mill says it will load directly onto rail cars for port shipment.
  • Officials from the provincial government and partner firm Ledesma attended the inauguration, which Los Balcanes presents as a private investment model to lower freight costs, expand exports and support local jobs and supply chains.
