TTAP Marches From Parliament to Supreme Court to Protest 27th Amendment

The protest follows Parliament's Nov. 13 approval of a law critics say erodes judicial independence.

Overview

  • Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and other TTAP leaders led the rally from Parliament House to the Supreme Court in Islamabad.
  • Allama Abbas said "all roads to justice" have been closed, described the Constitution as a contested document and alleged curbs on free expression.
  • TTAP announced a nationwide Black Day for next Friday with supporters wearing black armbands and said a national conference will follow.
  • The 27th Amendment creates a Federal Constitutional Court, changes judicial appointments and transfers, and enables the Army chief to serve as Chief of Defence Forces.
  • Legal circles and both former and sitting judges have denounced the amendments as an attack on judicial independence, as TTAP also pressed for compensation after the Nov. 11 courthouse bombing that killed at least 12.
