Overview

  • A series of five earthquakes measuring between magnitude 5.0 and 7.4 struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula between 06:02 and 07:49 UTC on July 20.
  • The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and US National Tsunami Center issued and revoked alerts for Russia’s far east, Hawaii and other Pacific regions after no significant waves were recorded.
  • Russia’s Emergencies Ministry had forecast maximum wave heights of 60 cm for the Commander Islands and up to 15 cm for Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
  • The USGS assigned a Green alert indicating a low likelihood of fatalities or economic losses and reported the largest quake occurred at a depth of 20 km.
  • No injuries or damage have been reported and seismic agencies remain vigilant for further aftershocks along the Pacific–North American plate boundary.
