Tsunami Threat Lifted After 7.5 Quake Shakes Drake Passage

Authorities are assessing Antarctic installations given the quake's remote offshore epicenter.

Overview

  • USGS confirmed a magnitude 7.5 earthquake at 22:16 local time at a shallow depth of about 10–10.8 kilometers.
  • Chile’s SHOA and Senapred declared a precautionary state for the Chilean Antarctic coast, directing people to leave shoreline areas.
  • The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center later reported no tsunami was expected and canceled the alert.
  • The epicenter lay roughly 259 kilometers northwest of Chile’s Eduardo Frei Antarctic base, with Tolhuin and Ushuaia in Argentina more than 700 kilometers away.
  • No injuries or damage were reported, and Chilean officials said assessments of people, infrastructure and basic services were continuing.
