Overview
- Japan’s meteorological agency placed the offshore quake at roughly M6.7–6.9 at 5:03 p.m. local time off the Sanriku coast at a shallow depth of about 10–16 kilometers.
- The advisory for Iwate was lifted after about three hours once minor tsunami surges of 10–20 centimeters were recorded at Ofunato, Miyako, Kamaishi and Kuji.
- Residents were urged to stay away from the coast during the advisory as public broadcaster NHK relayed warnings and bullet trains were briefly suspended for safety checks.
- Dozens of aftershocks were logged through the evening, including several above M5.0 and an event around M6.4 reported by the USGS.
- Officials reported no injuries or major damage and no irregularities at nuclear facilities, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said its data indicated no tsunami threat.
