Tsunami Advisories Lifted After Offshore Quakes Off Iwate in Northeast Japan

Aftershocks persist along the Tohoku coast, with officials reporting small tsunami waves, service delays and no major injuries.

Overview

  • Japan’s Meteorological Agency revised the Nov. 9 main shock to magnitude 6.9 at about 17:03 local time and about 10 km depth, while the USGS measured 6.8.
  • The JMA issued a tsunami advisory for Iwate with waves estimated up to 1 meter, then lifted it hours later after observed arrivals of roughly 10–20 cm at Miyako, Kuji, Ofunato and Ominato.
  • More than ten aftershocks followed, the largest around magnitude 6.3, and a separate magnitude 6.2 quake on Nov. 10 prompted a new, lower-level advisory forecasting tide changes up to 20 cm.
  • Rail service, including Shinkansen lines, experienced delays and brief power outages were reported, and officials said nearby nuclear facilities showed no anomalies.
  • Authorities caution residents to expect additional shaking over the coming days and to heed official instructions and coastal warnings when issued.
